Riding the City Bus – A Worthwhile Experience

                                                                                         

For me taking a trip on the city bus will always be an adventure. Where else are there people with different life stories that you will hear and be able to watch? Where else will you see a large snoring lady squeezing a tiny man every time the bus turns a corner? Then there is the teen whose fingers are texting on their cell phone while dancing to the beat of the music on his Ipod? And where else would you hear an angel faced girl talking on a mobile phone a mile a minute with the conversation generously interspersed with today's details?

By taking a trip on the city bus you will be able to see the variances of life. No doubt you will wonder at the cruelty and racial discrimination when whites refused to be seated with blacks. But you will also be filled with pride when someone stands and offers his seat to a woman carrying packages and a baby.

Certainly, you will admire the kindness of another who went out of his way to assist a disabled woman by volunteering to insert the transit pass to the slot.

Taking a bus has some negative connotations. Some people think that the bus is only for people who do not have cars and for those who do not have money. Sometimes this is true. Think how much a gallon of gas cost today. Bus rides takes longer than cabs but the fares are much cheaper. In a taxi you will be more comfortable but you will rob yourself the chance of witnessing the quirks of people.

I am sure that some people have not considered the fact that by riding a bus we are actually reducing air pollution. If you take a bus you will be able to help reduce traffic congestion thus protect the environment by decreasing the greenhouse gas emissions.

So if you are riding the bus for the first time here are some very useful tips for you. First, make sure that you have the exact amount of the fare. If you use a transit pass have it ready before you board the bus. It would be a common courtesy for regular bus riders who want to reach their destination as quickly as possible. If it is your first time touch base with the driver about your route. Most drivers are friendly and glad to help.

Don’t block the aisle. Notice the empty seat no one takes? That’s reserved for the disabled passengers. To clear the aisle, you can take the seat but be sure to stand and give the seat if a disabled person boards the bus.

Lastly don’t forget to thank the driver. These people have a tough job and a kind word could make a difference to their day.
