Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure except in a few limited situations. The most significant risk factor is having worked with or near asbestos which was commonly used for many years throughout the world. Though there are known cases of mesothelioma in people who have never been exposed to asbestos, the vast majority have been.
Exposure to asbestos can also occur in family members of people what worked with or around asbestos. Asbestos dust exposes family members to the fibers which can result in mesothelioma. It is not uncommon for the spouses and children of people who worked around asbestos to have been exposed to this dust. There are also documented cases from people associated with irradiation (Thorotrast) and from inhaling fibrous silicates like Erionite.
People who have been exposed to asbestos who also smoke are at the greatest risk for developing mesothelioma. In the 1950s, Kent cigarettes used asbestos fibers in their filters and there have been cases of mesothelioma tied specifically to that deadly combination.
There is scientific evidence that asbestos fibers are in water supplies and food products. This leads some to wonder how significant this asbestos exposure is in people who may not be aware that they have been exposed until they are diagnosed with mesothelioma.
If you or someone in your family has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should contact an attorney. Even if you are not yet sure about how or when you were exposed to asbestos, it is important that someone familiar with this type of litigation begin to put the pieces of the puzzle together for you.
