It is not only adults that are suffering from eczema but there seems to be an increase in the number of babies that are also suffering from this condition. It can be a real struggle to deal with baby eczema simply because your baby is not in a position that they are suffering.

Different times of the year can make matters worse such as the winter time when there is a very low level of humidity which makes the skin even drier, but you should not panic and there are many positive steps that you can take in order to help keep your baby’s skin soft all the time.

Should you notice that the skin of your baby is very dry then you need to reduce the amount of contact that is made with water and the best way to do this is to reduce the number of baths that are given. When your baby starts to become mobile and so starts to crawl, your baby is going to become dirtier, but giving your baby a bath every other day, rather than daily, will be enough to keep your baby clean. The problem with excessive water contact is that it does remove any essential oils that are needed away from the skin, so this is why it becomes dry.

The answer to stop the skin becoming dry after bath time is to apply a baby lotion to the skin. It is best to do this after bath time because the pores of the skin are open, so more moisture will be absorbed, and sometimes it is best to apply just a small additional application after the first, just to help to keep the skin hydrated throughout the day.

It is important that any products that you apply to your baby’s skin is specifically designed for skin that is delicate and fragile. Given that baby skin is very thin and sensitive it is easily irritable so you need to avoid any products that contain any harsh ingredients. Do not use products that are heavily scented as these will be no more than artificial additives which could lead to irritation.

Do not be afraid to apply lotion to the skin of your baby, it really is worth it sometimes just to put on a little a extra, as this helps to keep the skin soft for much longer and the is no loss of moisture during the day. It is important that the environment in which your baby is, is not too hot and this will cause the skin to dry, so you need to be keeping a close eye on the temperature, and if your baby is feeling a little cold it is better to add additional layers of clothing rather than to turn up the temperature.

When it comes to actually washing the skin, during the first few weeks if not months, there is no need to use any soaps at all. The simplest way to keep the skin clean is to soak a ball of cotton wool with water and to rub this over the skin. There also includes the nappy area, just use water. Only when the baby starts to age should you consider using soaps.
