A little bit of land and a lot of luxury. Townhouses are becoming very popular in Melbourne. Not surprisingly many couples who have had the traditional four bedroom, two bathroom home when the children were growing up, are now ‘downsizing’ to the inner city suburbs and investing in their own ‘upmarket’ townhouse.

Selling the ‘old’ family home may be distressing for some, but with the cost of ‘free-standing’ houses escalating daily, there is a rising number of couples selling home of their family, doing very well out of the sale thankyou, and then buying a gorgeous townhouse. Gone are the days when townhouses were for the European and English aristocracy and ‘nouveau riche’ because now ‘ordinary’ mums and dads and young couples, are discovering the appeal of the townhouse.

Once conspicuous as the city dwellings of a favoured few, townhouses are now the first choice for many Melburnians, who find them a nice alternative to either the restrictions of an apartment or the continuing maintenance headache of a smaller home. Buying real estate online is becoming popular too and to find the newest townhouses log on to realestate.com.au and check to purchase a contemporary townhouse in one of Melbourne’s premier locations and at the right price.

Moreover, because a townhouse is more affordable than a freestanding house, it is attractive to first-home buyers, particularly if it is bought ‘off the plan.’ If you go to sites such as evolutioninliving.com.au you can find townhouses being built ‘off the plan’ with uninterrupted river views. The other site, which I browsed today, was OzFreeOnline.com where in their real estate pages I found hundreds of townhouses Australia wide. All you need to do is join, log in, and select the criteria for what you want. It’s as easy as that.

Townhouses were never really the type of property that enticed Melburnians until the past couple of decades, when the price of traditional quarter-acre blocks climbed out of reach of many buyers.
