No matter if you like social networking growth or not, it's rise and continued dominance within our culture seem only too obvious.

Was MySpace first?

Perhaps, but now you have…

FaceBook
Twitter
Friendster
LinkedIn

And that really is just the tip of the iceberg.

Some claim that all these sites are unsafe and should be avoided. Taking a walk through the woods is an unsafe practice in some situations, but that certainly doesn't mean we should avoid exploring nature. We can however increase the safety of virtual reality just as we can that of physical reality.

We don't need more regulations, but rather greater wisdom when approaching the social networks. It is true that no matter how "safe" a person tries to be there is always some aspect of vulnerability when cruising through virtual reality. However, to think that this applies only to virtual reality would be a grave error indeed as the same applies to whatever endeavors we choose to invest our lives toward. For example, you can go to the wrong church and be swooped up into a Jim Jones mentality if you aren't careful.

With that said, there are some key things that can be done to remain safe on the Internet.

* Don't divulge personal details. It's okay to tell people what state you live in, but providing them with your address or phone number is something to be cautious about.

* Don't believe everything you hear. You wouldn't enter a social nightclub and believe everything that everyone told you without checking things out. Why would you do such on a social network site?

* Know your limits. Decide how deep you will or will not go in dialog and stick to it. I got this article idea from a post that I read from 2006. What you say may be available for others to read for quite some time to come.

In an era of social network growth it is quite possible to participate without putting yourself or your family in danger. Just be careful with what you do and do not choose to divulge to the world.
