NYC Nightlife has traditionally been an adult institution - most NY nightspots are clearly off limits to minors. However, there actually is a NYC Nightlife available to those under the age of 21. In fact, there is a large number of NYC nightspots that admit people as young as 16.
Some of these clubs and nightspots cater especially to the under-21 crowd; others are open to minors on certain nights and/or for particular shows.
One thing that young people heading out to enjoy NYC Nightlife will need is an ID; if you are a young person going out for an evening on the town, you will need to prove your age (sorry, middle-schoolers), and don't attempt to order any alcoholic drinks. Chances are they won't be served in any event, and if they are, you will have to present your ID before a member of the waitstaff will even take your order (not that you should be in that part of the club anyway!)
That said, here is a sample of NYC Nightlife available to the under-21 crowd. You'll note that these nightspots offer the same range and diversity as adult venues - and it costs a whole lot less to get in to most of them as well!
The BB King Blues Club and Grill is a venue that is open to people of all ages, featuring the best R&B performers in the area. For the spiritually-minded seeking an alternative to Sunday morning church services, the club offers a "Gospel Music Brunch" at 1 and 3 on Sunday afternoons; if you're lucky, you might get to hear the Abyssinian Baptist Church Gospel choir from Harlem - arguably the premier gospel group in the country.
If "Riverdance" is more your style, you might want to catch the traditional Celtic music concerts held at the Blarney Star. This venue offers two shows every Friday night, and at $10, the cover charge is a bargain.
Young people who appreciate the sizzling Latin rhythms of salsa and the meringue will want to check out Helena's on Lafayette Street. This NYC Nightlife venue features DJs playing the latest music for Cuba and Latin America in a Spanish Garden setting - and admission is FREE.
Young people today are happily rediscovering the swing dancing enjoyed by their grandparents of the World War II generation. While Irving Plaza offers other types of music as well, youngsters who want to hear the sounds that inspired the jitterbug, the lindy hop and the suzie-q should come to their Sunday big band performances.
The Big Easy comes to the Big Apple at La Belle Epoque, where young people can enjoy French specialties while hearing great Louisiana zydeco music. This cafe is located on Broadway and is open from Wednesday through Sunday.
This is just the tip of the iceberg - young people who are willing to do a bit of detective work will find a rich diversity of NYC Nightlife available to them.
