The day arrives that you lose your job and, as a consequence, you and perhaps your family also lose your health insurance plan. Happily, temporary health insurance is one thing which can keep you afloat until you [get|secure|find} a new position. A temporary health insurance policy will cover your health care requirements from the time you lose your job until you become eligible for benefits under another employer's plan.

But just where should you start looking for a temporary health insurance policy? Like many people nowadays, your first stop will probably be one of the major internet search engines and these will provide you with a laundry list of directories. These directories each give you a list of companies which offer short term health insurance and even a hendful which will tell you precisely what it is. Knowing just what short term health insurance is and, just as importantly, what it is not will assist you in shopping for the best policy and keep you from getting scammed.

First of all, each state has its own brand of short term health insurance policy to help you hold onto the health insurance from your previous employer. For instance, in Minnesota it is called a Cobra Plan and will cover until you have a new position. Incidentally, state law also states that an employer must notify you of your eligibility for Cobra coverage.

Commercial short term health insurance plans generally run from one month to a year, though a lot of insurance companies limit their plans to six months, and will provide most of the same benefits which are provided on their long term plans. The greatest difference you will find is that the policy is non-renewable and if you wish to keep your cover you will need to arrange a further new policy. Keep in mind that this type of policy is only intended for temporary use and not for long term use.

Some things which will perhaps not be covered are preventative care and wellness checks and temporary health plans will also not generally cover dental or optical care. Additionally, they are also often quite strict on denying cover for pre existing conditions. It is also generally possible to get cover extended to your spouse and children. You will find also that the majority of plans will be priced from about $25 to $100 a month.

Keeping these things in mind, you can begin to work your way through the results of your search and examine the lists of companies to locate one which will meet your requirements.

Yet another good place to look for cover is to your current car or home insurance provider as it is likely that they will also carry a health insurance policy which you can get. If you are buying the policy through your own insurer, there might be a discount available to you for having more than one policy with them.

Finally, do not forget that your local phone book could also list a number of places for you to purchase temporary health insurance cover in your area.
