I was recently researching how tattoo removal is on the rise.
In this new study the percent of women wanting their tattoos removed is around 69 percent. Quite the switch from the mid 90's when the percent was higher for men wanting their tattoos removed.
When women were asked as to why they found it most important for them, it mostly had to do with the public eye.
Some of the reasons mentioned: Suffering embarrassment, lowering of body image, finding a new job or career, finding clothes that fit properly to cover tattoos that show inappropriately, experiencing stigma and some just plan wanted their tattoos off and didn't disclose why.
I have seen some beautiful tattoos out there and dating a tattoo artist years ago, I found a respect for the art. I also know that tattoos are still not completely socially acceptable on many different levels and places.
In the work place and some other social areas it seems to be more tolerable if a man has a tattoo that shows more than a woman. I experienced some of this first hand with a couple of friends of mine (women) who had tattoos and what they went through in the work place and at some social events. At these same places I witnessed the men with tattoos not harassed as much to cover them and so on.
