Alberobello, in the heart of the Itria Valley in southern Italy, is the only town in the world that was founded and grew as a land of trulli. The Trulli of Alberobello are an example of human ingenuity and the ability to adapt. The only plentiful construction material was stone and the trulli were the solution found by the first peasants who arrived to colonize the ancient forest some 500 years ago. At that time, anyone who built a dwelling on the King's land was heavily taxed. With this in mind, the Pugliesi cleverly devised the drywall stone trulli solely for purposes of tax evasion. As the story goes, upon word of the taxman's arrival, the trulli were rapidly dismantled and moved out of sight to be rebuilt only shortly after the visit.

The historical center of Alberobello is made up of a hundred trulli located on a hilltop amid the scent of almond and olive trees. It has been declared part of the UNESCO world heritage in 1996. Their conical shaped roofs, the concentric "chiancarelle" which cover them, their typically Mediterranean appearance and the magical symbols painted upon them create an enchanting landscape. The product of an inventive mind. While respecting the architectural authenticity of the patrimony, the trulli are true examples of organic architecture. Although these "little cathedrals" are built in a simple way with stones, they conform to every rule of statics. In fact, the survival of these simple and ingenious architectural works is what qualified them for inclusion on the World Heritage List. And the irony is that they were meant to be temporary housing to avoid paying a royal tax. Strolling among the Trulli of Alberobello, in this fairytale scenery of white cylinders with dark cone roofs, you will experience a great emotion that in itself is worth the trip to Puglia.

La Valle D`Itria is situated in a beautiful plain between Locorotondo and Martina Franca, about 30 kms from Taranto, the capital of the province. The region is covered with ancient olive trees and fruit- and almond trees. Countless vineyards extend over the even and hilly scenery Woodlands are lying next to fields on which red poppies are flourishing in early summer on the dark earth. Drystone walls separate fields accurately cultivated. Farmers have collected the stones of these walls from the fields for centuries. They are also used for constructing the trulli, the typical construction of this region: a round building with a conic roof.

Countless trulli are scattered throughout the entire Valle D´Itria, the heart of the trulli-country. Almost 5000 of these unique buildings are situated here. The houses in white chalk either isolated or assembled appear like little fairytale houses amidst this colorful scenery. Not surprisingly, the UNESCO decided that the Valle D`Itria and Alberobello, home to a mere 1000 trulli, was worth to be protected. Since 199
6 the region and the trulli belong to the World Cutlural Heritage.
Living in the Valley means also being situated between the two seas - the Adriatic and the Ionian. Fascinating coastlines offer rocky and sandy beaches, remote natural reserves and water sports. At the same time cultural life, shopping, wine and dine is catered for nearby in such lively towns as Martina Franca and Cisternino, Alberobello and Locorotondo.
