Why do companies need call accounting software when the telecom service providers send their customers invoices which includes the calls made and the costs? Obviously, costly errors in the bills can be caught by call accounting software, but there are a variety of reports the software can produce which can lead to increased employee productivity and additional reductions in telecom costs.

Call accounting software can collect and store call detail records which provide useful data such as what telephone numbers were called, which company extensions are making the telephone calls, the duration of the telephone calls, the date and the time each call was made and the cost per call. This information can be quite beneficial.

The data can also determine if the company does not have a sufficient number of lines which will cause too many busy signals to incoming callers which can lead to loosing customers to competitors.

Equipment inventory reports provide the opportunity to itemize telephone equipment cost for each extension. A portion of the cost of the company's telephone equipment can be allocated to each department. This helps determine the true cost of each department and extensions.

Other call accounting software reports allow companies to identify how many calls were excessive in length and in cost and which employees were making them. Employees should have to provide justification for these types of calls.
