Playa Grande beach is located right in the centre of Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote's most lively resort. This busy beach is over one kilometre long and has convenient shower and changing facilities; you can hire pedalos from here and go on a banana boat if you are feeling brave. If you are staying in the end of Puerto del Carmen closer to Matagorda and Los Pocillos, they also have a beach with lots of sun beds available to hire and wind-breakers to stop you getting sand blasted.

My husband and I discovered that the best place for windsurfing on the island is Las Cucharas beach; sports equipment can be hired for a small charge and there are plenty of sun beds and parasols. Still in Costa Teguise is El Jabillo beach, this beach is very windy but the sea is calm and tranquil. Los Charcos beach in Costa Teguise is a small, white sand beach with calm waters.

My favourite beaches on the island are in Lanzarote's southern resort of Playa Blanca. The most fabulous definitely being the natural reserve of Papagayo, because of its unspoilt, natural golden sand dunes and calm turquoise waters. Parts of the Papagayo beaches are very popular with naturists, due to its remote and peaceful location. Here we managed to find a secluded spot to sunbathe in private. Playa Dorada is a man made, white sand picture-perfect beach with wheelchair access and a beach bar. Another purpose built beach in the centre of Playa Blanca is Playa Flamingo; it has a calm lagoon of shallow water, perfect if you are taking young children.

When we drove up to the north of Lanzarote we discovered a variety of natural beaches, which are much less crowded - even in the summer months. Extremely popular with surfers on the island, Famara beach is over 6 kilometres of beautiful golden sand, excellent waves and local surf shops hiring out different types of equipment. The current of the water makes it difficult to swim in though, so I wouldn't recommend taking the kids. In the small town of Arrieta is the golden beach of La Garita, here the sea is calm and there are a couple of really good 'tapas' restaurants and children's play area. Caleton Blanco near the northern town of Orzola is a small beach, covered in white sand and black lava rock. These natural lagoons are well worth a look.

There are many more beaches on this wonderful island, some I have still to discover! But you can find a beach to suit everyone, whether you want to explore natural lagoons, catch some waves or just relax on your sun bed.
