Starting a media business doesn’t sound like something that would be easy. Most people think you’d need a sales team, editors and designers. But, thanks to advancements in technology, you can kick-start you media business while working from home – all you’ll need is a computer and an internet connection.

Find something you’re passionate about

Is there something you have a deep passion for, or maybe something that you’re extremely knowledgeable about? If so, then this could be a great topic for your website. Once you have decided on a topic, it is then time to research the market and see what competitors exist in your space. Do you feel you could compete with the quality of their content on your own? Do you think you can add value, and analysis, where they are lacking? Do you feel it would be possible for you to get exclusives, and break news in this area? If you’re not able to answer yes to any of these questions, then you need to consider focusing on another area. To run this work at home business, you’ll need to write the content so make sure you’re comfortable with the topic.

Contact an internet marketing agency

If you don’t have any web development and design knowledge, then you should contact an internet marketing business who will help you to put together your website. They should also be able to provide you advice on choosing a domain name, setting up a hosting account, and everything else that goes into getting your articles online. This means you can work from home, and have an agency house the expert staff you would otherwise have to employ.

If you do not have any web design knowledge then your agency will probably suggest that you use a CMS (content management system) or blogging software to make it easier for you to add articles to your website. They will also be able to help you with on-going work on your website. However, for the most part, it shouldn’t be necessary to buy services from the firm beyond the initial design and deployment of your website. You will, however, have to spend money on hosting your website. You might also wish to have them install and discuss advertising servers with you. Through developing a close relationship with your agency, you will be able to work from home and allow them to handle technical issues from their offices.

Advertising Sales

If you feel like you would like to close advertising sales yourself, then this is something you could do. However, if you want to make sure things are as easy as possible to get started, until you get real traffic to your website, you may wish to use an outsourced advertising solution to ensure your business runs as efficiently as possible. A business such as Google, Federated Media or Value Click will sell advertising on your website for you. They will then give you a share of the earnings they bring in. This lets you focus on editorial, and means you can work from home – let them house the sales staff.

When your business grows you will not longer be able to work from home, and you will have to bring on staff. But, until that time, at least you will be able to make good money and finance your business through profit.
