When you are getting ready to move, there are many things to remember about packing. The way you pack your items will mean easier access once you get moved, less breakage of your items, and better organization in general. Most of us like to do our own packing, and that can take a lot of time depending on how much stuff you have in your home. Make sure you allow yourself several weeks time for packing.

First go through your items and decide what you will be taking with you and what you will be leaving behind. Some things that you no longer need can go to storage or in the garbage. You will need packing supplies when you start packing your items. These packing supplies will consist of boxes, packing tape, bags, bubble wrap, wrapping paper, labels or markers, and other packing supplies that will help to make the job easier when you go to move. Decide on all the things you will need and make sure you have them oh hand. Most packing items can be purchased at your local general store. You may want to start collecting boxes by asking friends and relatives for spare boxes. You can also get them from a grocery store if needed.

It is best to start out packing items that you don’t use that often. This will give you a big head start on packing. You will want to leave out the items that you use everyday until the very last minute. After packing boxes, mark or label each one with a list of its contents. Some people find it easier to just mark the location of where the boxes will be going such as the kitchen or the bedroom. Some boxes may need to be labeled fragile if you have delicate items. Wrap your items up with newspaper or bubble wrap if they are fragile to keep them from breaking while being moved. You can even use clothes to wrap fragile items for safe keeping. Just remember to unwrap them with care. Seal the boxes with packing tape so that they don’t break open in transit from one location to the other. Awkwardly shaped items may have to just be picked up and moved separately; these items include floor lamps, mops, brooms, and any other item that will be too hard to pack in a box.

Some furniture may need to be taken apart in order to be moved properly. Make sure you keep all the parts together to put it back together easily, including the screws and bolts that hold it together. Furniture legs should be wrapped to protect them from getting scratched while being moved. Table tops should be wrapped with a blanket or some other protective covering in order to keep them safe. You will want your furniture to stay in great shape while being moved. Just be very careful when moving your items and take your time.
