Although it is normal for everyone to have some fears, suffering from a phobia is a more significant problem. A phobia is an overblown fear that is seemingly beyond one's control. Phobias are considered to be a kind of anxiety disorder, and often trigger nervousness and panic attacks in a sufferer. When a person has a serious phobia, they become so desperate to avoid their fear that it affects their daily lives and their ability to function in life.
Some of the most common phobias are acrophobia, the fear of heights, claustrophobia, a fear of enclosed spaces, and arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Arachnophobia is the number one most common phobia. Although many people are afraid of spiders, people with arachnophobia have an abnormal amount of fear. Even a photograph or drawing of an arachnid can make some people distressed. Some arachnophobes have anxiety attacks or panic at the sight of an arachnid. They are often willing to do anything in order to get away from a spider; for example, people with extreme arachnophobia might attempt to get out of a moving vehicle if they see a spider in the car.
Sufferers often feel ashamed of their uncontrollable reactions. Other people and even the sufferers themselves might find their behavior irrational. Their fear of spiders and their reaction to the creatures may cause other problems as well. Arachnophobia and other phobias may lead to a condition called agoraphobia.
Agoraphobia may arise when an individual fears being in any potentially stressful place or situation. For a person with arachnophobia, this can mean avoiding any place a spider may be hiding, new places, and even avoiding leaving the house or going outdoors altogether. This can seriously interfere with a person's daily life. A person may be worried about having panic attacks or embarrassing him or herself by losing control. Many people find themselves constantly stressed over their concerns.
People with phobias may struggle with the inability to control their fears. This is due to the fact that the root of the problem lies in the unconscious mind; so conscious effort or willpower won't work to control a phobia. A phobia is best treated at the unconscious level, which is why Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are the most effective phobia treatments.
There are numerous different programs available for handling phobias. Most use conventional hypnosis techniques that depend on post-hypnotic suggestions with very specific wording to combat fears. These days, post-hypnotic suggestions rarely work because most people have a tendency to question everything. And since today's population tends to do the opposite of what they are told, they resist post-hypnotic suggestions and experience an entirely conflicting response.
Ericksonian hypnosis therapy is different from traditional hypnosis because it uses indirect suggestions that are hidden in conversation. This makes them hard for the mind to detect, so they will make it through to the unconscious level and be adopted.
The procedure typically starts by using hypnosis to make you feel very calm and receptive. Then, instead of simply "telling" your unconscious mind what to do, Ericksonian techniques use stories and metaphors to lead your mind into a fear-free thought process.
NLP techniques work by honing in on the particular thought process that generates an irrational phobia and using it to eliminate the fear. Because of this, NLP will be effective on all phobias.
People respond much better to the combination of NLP and Ericksonian techniques than to conventional hypnosis because instead of hearing commands, the unconscious mind is convinced to follow a different, more logical line of reasoning. These programs are very effective for people who are analytical, critical thinkers and people who like to think independently.
You do not need a unique hypnosis program for each different phobia. One program that includes several sessions with the perfect combination of Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP techniques can treat any phobia. Additionally, a well-designed program will be effective for everyone. The mix of separate techniques in several different sessions ensures success for anyone who uses them. By completing each step of the program, people are often amazed at how easily they overcome their fears.
Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP focus on changing irrational fears and behaviors into rational, calm responses. For many individuals fighting debilitating fears such as arachnophobia, this is a life-changing therapy. Hypnosis therapy is a powerful tool for beating fears and anxieties to live a fuller, happier life.
