I was reading an article recently that was dealing with public speaking. The specific focus of the article was about gesturing while you speak. It had various different types of gestures that you can use along with what each gestures indicates to other people.

To give an example, it mentions first that you should not plan out your gestures or else you’ll likely come away looking like exactly what you are: rehearsed. Your gestures should be natural, even if they are still generally intentional. After all, not gesturing at all will make you look rigid and closed off.

Now, the real issue here deals with how much people will judge you when they first meet you. The example of a speech still applies to everyday life, because if you really think about, how much stock you put into how laid back a person feels.

I have talked to people before who seemed to make these big hand gestures all the time to such an extent it felt like they were getting carried away with themselves, just as I have talked to be who had their arms so tightly by their sides they looked like a nervous wreck.

A lot of people who have to network a lot focus quite heavily on their business card printing in order to make a good impression. The truth is that everything about you will be watched when you first meet someone.

I am not saying everyone will be staring intently at you and judging your every movement on a score card, but they will be conscious of it whether they realize it or not, just like you are conscious of it in other people.

Some great business card printing will make a good impression on people, but you will still also be a part of the impression. After all, if articles are being written on something like hand gestures it goes to show how much some people really are paying attention to every little detail.

As to how you should act, unfortunately I cannot give you any single answer to that. There is no one right way for you to act to give the best impression, but there are some things to be aware of.

Act natural. The more forced or rehearsed you are the more people will be able to see it. Unless you are a great actor, a forced behavior comes across as stiff and false. Calm yourself down and be yourself.

If you make a good impression your business card will have a lot of the work done for it. And a great business card can make a good enough impression alone to help eased back the burden on you, helping you to be more calm and natural.

Only experience will be able to really help you when it comes to networking. The best thing you can do to improve yourself is to get out there and start interacting with your future customers.
