Ever sat around with some friends and gone over what was popular back when you were younger? Depending on your age you might go over the tie-dye, laid back look of the sixties, the bellbottom, platform shoes look of the seventies, or maybe the techno, wildly colored hair and shoulder pads of the eighties.

I could go on and on. Every society is filled with looks and styles that were once what everyone wore and are now looked back on as a silly, dated appearance no one would bother to touch these days.

How much of this is true for your company?

Every company is going to evolve over the years. If you don’t than you aren’t likely to be in business for very long. Odds are the internal workings of your company have changed considerably over the years to match the changes in society and give people what they need.

After all, the needs of each time period aren’t always the same, and if you want to stick around, you need to be able to provide people with something they can use.

But how much have you changed the outside of your company? The brand name that you got so strongly associated with you is going to have certain elements of the time period it was made during, and is your brand still stuck in the past?

There was a point in time when Apple computers were seen as a thing of the past. When computers were first becoming prominent all you saw were Apple computers taking over the market. They were the ones advertising the most and they were the ones using color printing to tell people about the wonders of their machines. Every school and business had one, until Microsoft came along and swept

Suddenly the Apple computer looked dated. It was a mark of the beginning of the industry, and not where the industry had gone, until they revitalized their look with the Imac, and gave computers a sleek new image they’d never had before. Their brand name suddenly became fresh again.

Ask yourself what your brand name means. When you get your brochure printing done, what are people saying when they see your brand name all over the front of them?

Being stuck in the past can be a great way for a company to sink itself very fast, and many companies that evolve with the times forget to update their face to the people. You can update your inner workings all you want, but the people on the streets aren’t likely to know a lot about it. They’re looking at your brand name.

You need to make sure that brand name stays up to date and never lags behind the times. Don’t let your brand name be something people talk about while rolling their eyes and the foolish things they liked when they were younger.
