Are you one of the millions of folks who are making New Years' Resolutions...and failing to keep them? Are you tired of that?

Then this year try something different. Learn the process of making lasting change in your life instead of focusing only on specific challenges. Once you master this process you can use that knowledge to target areas that are troubling you most.

Best of all, your odds of success will greatly increase.

- Enthusiasm is important.
Don't set yourself up to fail; make sure you really WANT this lifestyle change. If you don't, you won't make it happen. Period. Take a hard look at why you don't want the goal. You may decide your energies are better spent elsewhere. Or you may be able to clear up some internal conflicts and then move forward.

- See the future.
Concentrate on looking long-term. Losing ten pounds for a special occasion isn't nearly as powerful as deciding to increase your overall level of fitness. Also, be prepared for the new feelings you will experience as a result of your new actions. How will this movement forward benefit you in the long-haul? See it and feel it until your new lifestyle has already happened in your mind.

- Learn to embrace change.
Change can be scary...or exciting. Usually both. It's all in the perspective. When you practice seeing change as mostly positive and useful, as a key component in your life's adventure plan, you will be amazed at the doors of opportunity that will open to you.

- You're in charge.
It's your life. That is the huge gift God has given you. Plan it. Shape it. Research it. Craft it. Be decisive.
Once you master this skill, you probably won't find yourself facing the same old challenges each New Year.

- Don't overload.
So you want to re-invent yourself? Okay. Just know it won't happen overnight. Focus on only one or two habits at a time and be prepared to expend the extra energy that all change requires.

- Share the time with a friend.
Change is tricky. Make the whole process more user-friendly by employing the buddy system. Some extra support can make all the difference.

- Be a blessing to yourself.
Decide to not make promises to yourself you cannot or will not keep. Instead, learn the art of change and craft the life you really want. Then you will make everyday the first day of your New Year!
