A short note on Hinoki oil

The essential oil is obtained by the steam distillation of root or leaves or the wood of tree Chamaecyparis obtusa L.

The Hinoki Cypress (also known as White Cedar) is a slow growing evergreen tree in Japan.

Hinoki oils are known for their ability to kill bacteria, viruses and viral infections, and fungus, and are used as a general and nerve tonic.
Hinoki oils have relaxing and decongestant effects and are excellent for stuffy noses, sinus congestion, chest congestion, respiratory conditions, and breathing problems like asthma as well as relief of tension and stress.


Hinoki wood oil

The oil has woody odour and used upto 5% in fragrance formulations.

The major components of the wood oil are;

Cadinene-20-25

Cadinol-10-12

Muurolene-6-8

Muurolol-15-18

Cadinenol-5-8

The minor components of the oil are Borneol, Bornyl acetate, Para-cymene, Alpha&Beta-pinene, Verbenone, Terpinyl acetate, Fenchol, etc.


Hinoki leaf oil

It has strong, camphor, fresh, pine, green odour pattern.

It is used upto 6% in fragrances.

The major components of the leaf oil are;

Bornyl acetate-7-10

Cadinene-3-4

Cedrene-4-5

Caryophyllene-3-4

Elemol-12-16

Alpha-eudesmol-5-6

Beta-eudesmol-6-7

Gamma-eudesmol-8-9

Muurolene-9-12

Alpha-&beta-pinene-2-4

Terpinyl acetate-9-12

Fenchol-1-2

Limonene-3-4

The minor components of the oil are Borneol, Terpinene, Longifolene ,
Para-cymene, Cedrol, Verbenone, Elemene, Sabinene, etc.


Hinoki root oil

Hinoki Root Oil used to be distilled in substantial quantities The oil is produced by steam distillation of the roots which are chopped but not always dried prior to distillation.

The root has a dry, woody, camphor, sweet, spicy odour pattern.

It is used upto 4% in perfume formulations.

The major components of the leaf oil are;

Verbenone-2-3

Terpineol-3-5

Muurolol-4-5

Longiverbenone-6-8

Cadinene-5-8

Cadinol-8-10

Caryophyllene alcohol-2-3

Longinojigiku alcohol-18-22

Longicampholenic aldehyde-6-9

Longicyclenyl alcohol-3-5

The minor components in the oil below 2% are Terpinyl acetate,
Alpha and Beta-Pinene, Muurolene, Fenchol, Caryophyllene, Borneol
and Bornyl acetate.
