A lot of talk has been in the news lately about reinstating the draft. Proponents argue that to man our modern all volunteer military, we are forcing our middle and lower class sons and daughters into military service while the upper class and rich kids are exempted.
They contend that our country and the principles for which we stand are being defended by the poor or economically challenged while the upper classes reap the benefits of their sacrifice. They contend that a draft will force a larger segment of the upper classes into military service, an act that will enrich the military. Proponents of the present volunteer system state that a draft will hurt the military by forcing unwilling people to serve in an all volunteer force that has worked well for decades.
I happen to agree with those who argue that the well-off are sitting back and letting the poor do their patriotic duty for them. In my opinion every citizen who reaps the benefits of our democracy should have a hand in protecting and preserving that democracy, whether they're obscenely rich or incredibly poor.
I am also a strong adherent for universal military service. I strongly believe that every American citizen, who is physically and mentally capable, upon graduation from high school should be required to serve a minimum of one year in military service. This includes both men and women.
Your initial reaction may be, "My daughter in the military, you gotta be kidding!" Not at all! The military services have over 250 job specialties, most of which are open to women, and many of which could probably be done better by women, excluding the combat arms jobs.
For their service in the military, Congress should guarantee them two years of college tuition for one year of service, four years of college tuition for two or more years of service and all veterans benefits.
For those who cannot do military service, a set-up similar to the 1930's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) should be formed, which would include federal and state jobs like the Park Service, Border Patrol, Customs, Teacher assistants, Homeland Security, and other positions should be mandatory alternates.
I also firmly believe that to qualify for any civil service position with federal or state government, military service should be a mandatory prerequisite. In other words, if they haven't served their time in the military service or alternate service, they would not be qualified for a lucrative federal or state level civil service job. This includes all government agencies such as the post office, cabinet level positions, state civil service positions and so on.
There should be no exemptions from universal military service except for medical, physical, or extreme hardship disqualification's. Senator Smedlap's son, billionaire Donald's daughter, Rock/Movie Star Jones son, or Sports idol Duffy's daughter, would not be exempted.
For those supposedly undesirable citizens (those who got into trouble when they were under age, or dropped out of school, or with a long list of petty crimes) a special service ran boot camp could be organized to turn them back into productive citizens and give them another opportunity at life. One which includes a mandatory GED course.
There are far too many youngsters (age 18-25), sitting in jail or barred from military service because of mistakes committed when they were ignorant teen-agers or from a lack of personal/family/school/church commitment. Rather than let them languish in jail or sit on street corners with absolutely no prospects of any future except back to crime, enlist them in the universal military service program.
To fully train a service member in their selected MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) takes almost a year. Under a universal military service program, not only would our country have a massive pool of trained citizens to draw upon in the event of national emergency, our civil service jobs (jobs hard to get and often obtained only by those who know someone) would go to those who have patriotically served their country.
Boot Camp alone would help to get our youngsters off to a good start in life. Retired service personnel, especially those who taught in military schools, would make excellent high school teachers.
