Taking care of your furniture is important, especially if you want it to last for many years. This is even more important for leather furniture. Treating it in the wrong way can cause serious problems. Here are some tips to ensure that your leathers show their best and last for years.

You'll want to start any leather cleaning with a moisturizing soap. Leather cleaning soap can usually be purchased where you bought your leather furniture. Always do a test patch first in a small, not easily visible spot, to be sure that the soap won't dis-color the furniture piece. Place the liquid soap in a damp, clean cloth or rag. In a gentle rubbing motion allow the leather soap to clean the leather surface. Try to avoid drenching the leather with too much water as this can deteriorate the leather. Go over the entire furniture piece section by section, once completed wipe away any excess soap and dry the furniture piece with an absorbent towel.

If you would like your leather to have an additional shine, you may use a polishing kit specifically made for furniture leather. When applying polish, ensure that any excess polish is wiped off. Using too much polish will leave unsightly streaks on the leather. In some cases it may deteriorate the leather if it is of poor quality. Good quality leathers will absorb the conditioners in the polish and keep it looking good.

Leather furniture pieces can be costly to buy, so it's in your benefit that you take care of them as best you can. When buying a leather item have the sales person explain how to best take care of that particular piece and pick up the necessary leather cleaners or polishers at the same time. With a bit of maintenance you are sure to have a beautiful leather furniture piece that will eventually have that wanted "worn in" look.
