The GPS is a navigational technology used to track the position of moving objects. The technology has been exhaustively used for surveying places and for determining the position of objects at rest.

The GPS technology has been extensively optimised to track the position of a device, person or any other gadget anywhere on earth. The system makes use of satellites to track down moving vehicles or any object from any place on the earth. This technology is so innovative that it can trace the path of any object from any position with ease. This is why it is used for map making and scientific surveying of land.

GPS is power-packed to trace the position of a moving object. In case of objects that are stationary, their positioning is termed as 'static positioning'. If the object is moving, their positioning is termed as 'kinematic positioning'. Static positioning is more useful in 'surveying' where as kinematic positioning is best used in cases of 'navigation'.

The control system in GPS technology makes it possible to trace flight paths, monitor traffic movement and also position of people. The antenna of the device receives signals that give information about other objects. The GPS satellite is used to broadcast GPS navigation message at 50 bit/sec. These messages are sent in frames and it takes 30 seconds to transmit each message.

The device works on the principle that there would be a server that would receive messages regarding the position of a GPS enabled device. These messages would be sent to the server by the device itself. The data is instantly analysed by the server to determine the position of the object. Thus, GPS is being rapidly installed in cars and flights to know their position. Geo-positioning works on two principles. The first mode known as 'point positioning' uses well defined co-ordinates. The second method known as 'relative positioning' determines coordinates taking one point as origin of a local co-ordinate system.

Hence, it is possible to make use of the GPS technology and stay in touch with people. It is a very convenient mean to survey a place and know the position of individuals and vehicles.
