You may have a fabulous collection of books, the result of your erudite pursuits, but if it is all placed in a haphazard manner, it may portray the wrong image about yourself. You may be heavily into literature and read everything from Cicero to Homer, Shakespeare, Tolstoy and Bernard Shaw. All that reading may leave you little time to arrange your books and they may just be dumped on the table or placed randomly on the shelf. If it's so, your bookshelf may resemble a pile of trash rather than a treasure trove of knowledge that it really is.
So take some time and arrange your bookshelves.
Here are a few tips:
1. Arrange by size
Place the smaller books on the upper shelvesand the larger books and the heavy leather bound volumes and the like on the lower shelf. Books of the same size should be kept together.
2. Change placement style
Keep some of the books in a standing position and some in a horizontal position. This way you are just being innovative and creating designs. Arrange the books on the shelves in a zigzag pattern. It looks attractive. It also gives the appearance of a bookshelf in a well stocked library.
3. Space them appropriately
Don't try to place as many books as you can on a single shelf. You are arranging books that you love and cherish and not packing sardines in a can. Leave a little space free on the shelf. This way it also becomes easier to remove books from the shelf easily.
4. Prioritize books
Obviously you won't read all the books at a given time or even the ones you use for reference will be a select few. These are the ones that stay on the shelf and the rest can be relegated to another place where they can lie till they are really required.
5. Group books
Books of the same subject or topic or maybe of the same author should be kept together. This way it will also be easier to locate books when you need them.
6. Decorate the shelves
Place paper, fabric or lace on the shelves when you arrange the books. You may also keep other fancy items like a candle etc on the shelf or on top of the bookcase.
7. Re-arrange often
Change the style or manner in which you have arrange the books often enough. If your bookshelf has grown old, order a new one. Consult an interior decorator who can suggest how to arrange the shelf or what sort of bookshelf to buy to complement the furniture in your room, if you are considering buying a new one.
