Though my visit to Bangalore was strictly official, I was determined to make most of it on the golf courses of Bangalore. And as luck would turn out to be, my trip was extended by 8 more days. If Bangalore ever decides to add to its already overflowing tally of names, then it has already one in the waiting, ‘South India’s Golf Capital’. Not only is Bangalore filled with golf course, the city is surrounded by some of the most picturesque golf courses in India, which are just a drive away. And the variety that these courses offer is good enough to make even the most ardent golfers, a fan of theirs. Add to that Bangalore’s climate, and you get one of the most splendid holiday settings.
Golf has been played on the Bangalore Golf Club’s course since 1876, making it the oldest course in use in India. Though it was the oldest, it was never counted among the best. But in last five years heavy renovations and alterations have taken place here and now looks like it is in hunt for a position among the best in Asia. Well, it still its drawbacks. The 18 holes are laid out on merely 60 acres which makes the course not too challenging for professionals, so is not considered as a championship course. But this also turns out to be its biggest attraction as well. The small size of it makes it really enjoyable and proves to be perfect for players who are trying to make it big on the major scene.
The other prominent course in Bangalore is the one belonging to Karnataka golf Association. Though the association celebrated its silver jubilee few years ago, the golf course has been in use for not more than 15 years. Designed by well-known Peter Thompson and situated close to the Bangalore airport, it claims to be the finest course south of Vindhyas. And to experience it, you will also have to shell out more. My advice, keep handy enough golf balls, as a lot of water comes into play at most of the holes. But the toughest one, the 4 par 7th one was thankfully devoid of water. If you are into Resort like courses, then there is just the one to your liking.
Eagleton Golf Resort, which is just an hour’s drive from the city centre and is situated on the Bangalore-Mysore highway. I visited the course because of an invitation from a friend living in the same complex as the course. And wasn’t I glad that I accepted the invitation. The complexis a part of residential development project that is complete with an expansive clubhouse with spacious rooms, tennis, badminton and squash courts, though I was interested in the golf circuit. Another gem of a course made me spend 2 hours more than what I kept aside for it. I learnt that there are more of them on the Mysore highway but I was really short on time so had to leave them for a later visit. Any ways, a round in three of the most brilliant courses in South India, in a span of one week, no regrets at all.
