Welcome to 2005 everyone, it is time to rejoice and celebrate technology and how far it has come. These days, a company in Washington DC can be run from Miami and nobody would be the wiser. Virtual meetings, Instant chat, Google Talk, Blackberry's and PDA's as well as the increasing availability of the Internet (including most airports) has changed the way business is conducted.
The old idea of the brick and mortar business is just that, old. No longer do businesses need a storefront unless they sell tangible items. Consultants, service providers, lawyers, accountants, etc. can now work from anywhere. Got a cell phone? Great, have your provider route a 1-800 number directly to your cell so you can be reached anytime anywhere. Need to fax something? Well luckily for you we have Efax, a site that allows you to send and receive faxes via email. The bottom line is anything you need, you can find on the road or even on vacation.
Recently I put this concept to the test, I ran my moving company Pacific West Moving while on vacation in the Bahamas. I didn't tell anyone I was gone, I continued business as usual. I has a high speed Internet connection in my hotel, I am already a member of Efax, and I had my phones routed to my cell. Needless to say the trip was great! I would receive client phone calls, network with my employees, and did everything I would normally do in the office. My customer service was still wonderful as usual, I answered all my calls and responded to clients immediately.
The point is mobility is here and the time is now. No longer to we have to live by old expectations of physically being where we operate. The Internet is a wonderful tool and I suggest each of you use it to your benefit. It is our ability to learn and adapt to new technology that keeps us ahead of the game, so I suggest you get on it!
