As much as you need to clean your teeth to prevent cavities and other gum diseases, Standard Poodles need dental care too. Though they do not or seldom develop cavities, Standard Poodles, just like other Poodle variety and other dog breeds, may develop plaque and tartar that could lead to gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). To prevent these problems, proper dental care is necessary. Proper dental care includes regular visits to veterinarian with oral exam and veterinary dental cleaning.

Dental cleaning should not be done in veterinary clinics during vet visits only. In order to maximize your dog's protection against dental diseases, dental cleaning at home is also necessary. Experts recommend that a dog's teeth should be brushed at least twice a week. Use a toothpaste that is specially formulated for dogs. This toothpaste should be safe for dogs to swallow since they cannot rinse and spit after brushing. Human toothpaste may not be safe for dogs because some contains detergent or other ingredients that can irritate the dog's stomach and besides, dogs do not like the taste of this toothpaste. There are also various pet toothbrushes to choose from. There are finger toothbrushes as well as electronic toothbrushes. You can also choose dental sponge and pads. Pet toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental sponges and pads can be found at some pet stores or pet section of grocery stores and also from your veterinarian.

Make brushing fun for you and your dog. Let him get used to you putting things in his mouth. Then introduce the dog toothbrush and toothpaste before attempting to actually brush his teeth. Allow him to lick the paste off the brush. If necessary, reapply toothpaste and start brushing one of both upper canine teeth since these are the easiest teeth that you can get. Then, gradually increase the number of teeth you are brushing. While brushing, talk to your dog in a happy voice and do not forget to praise for every good behavior. Make sure that your dog is relaxed during the process.

Aside from brushing, there are also other dental care items ideal in the prevention of tartar build up. These are tartar control biscuits, chew bones, rope toys and rawhide chips. Studies also reveal that hard kibbles help keep plaque from accumulating on the teeth. With these dental care advancements, there is no reason why your dog should suffer from various dental diseases.
