Some parents think their kids will never get involved with drugs – they’re good kids, they work hard in school and participate in family activities. While it’s true many model kids wouldn’t be tempted by cocaine or heroin, prescription drugs are a different story - nearly one million teenagers try prescription drugs for the first time every day and many will find themselves in a drug addiction treatment center at some time in the future.

Why will kids try prescription drugs when they won’t try cocaine? They have the incorrect impression that prescription drugs are safe. Doctors recommend them, and parents take them. It rarely occurs to the kids, or the parents, that they may wind up in a drug addiction treatment center.

Sometimes drugs are needed – no doubt about it. But 11% of women and 5% of men in the U.S. currently take antidepressants, for example, and 15 million antidepressant prescriptions were written for kids in 2007.

That’s nearly 50 million people on this one type of drug alone. Do they all really need those drugs? Were all other alternatives exhausted and all possible consequences – like prescription drug addiction and the need for drug addiction treatment – weighed against the benefits?

Kids whose parents talk to them about the dangers of drugs are 50% less likely to try them. But ‘do as I say, not as I do’ doesn’t always work. If the parent honestly needs drugs and nothing else has worked, then a kid could probably understand why a parent would be willing to expose themselves to the risks. But if drugs are taken at all frivolously, it sends the wrong message.

If you or someone you care about is dependant on prescription drugs, consider getting into a drug addiction treatment center to get off them so other options can be explored. It is safer, and tells the kids that drugs are not to be taken lightly. Doing this might save more kids from a life of prescription drug addiction or the need for a drug addiction treatment center some time in the future.
