Let’s say you’re at a conference or a trade show or even just engaged in a conversation with someone on the street. Let’s say the focus of your conversation is going to be promoting yourself and you have your business card all set and ready to hand to them.

Let’s pause this scenario where it is. Business card printing is something few successful people are going to be without, but at the same time many people put too much of a burden on the business card.

Nothing is going to sell yourself as well as you can as you’re standing there talking to the person. Yet, I’ve talked to many people that seem to want to push their business card at me more than anything else.

The way you come across is going to strengthen that business card. People will relate it directly to you and judge both the card and the person when it comes time for them to look you up later on.

Many people hire out a professional or slave away for several hours on their business card printing to make their card perfect. This isn’t by any means a bad thing. You want your card to be great and memorable, but you can’t blow it when you’re there with the person because you place so much of an emphasis on the card.

Go beyond the normal sales talk. Let your personality shine through. Talk about how you got into the industry that you did, and be honest about it. If everything is centered on nothing more than getting a sale people are going to feel it in your words.

An interesting story about a person’s career can be a good way of getting them to remember who you are. It doesn’t have to have anything to do with getting them to buy from you or use your services to still be a good means of marketing. If they actually like who you are they’ll be more inclined to want to give you business.

Make sure you don’t spend the whole time talking about yourself, either. Ask them questions. Try to make sure the conversation is balanced between both people so they don’t feel like you’re hogging all of the limelight. You don’t want them to think you’re too egotistical to care about what anyone else has to say.

You might end up talking about something completely unrelated to your field, and you might still be able to generate sales further down the line based purely on their good impression of you.

Business card printing can do a lot, but you can’t expect it to do everything to sell you. If you’re going to be present to hand someone a business card, give them a good impression of you. There won’t be any other opportunity to make an impression like that. Make the most of it.
