At a cost ranging from £32-£50, you may find it difficult to a better method for integrating your iPod into the rest of your home entertainment system than the Unison i-XD Dock by Cygnett.

Unobtrusive in design, the Unison i-XD Dock provides an interface between your iPod and a wide range of devices whilst allowing the user to view films and other video on the television or computer monitor screen, or listen to music on CD or in .mp3 format on one’s home stereo system. By using the thin, lightweight remote control apparatus, one can easily control the volume whilst navigating library lists from across the room. (Please note however that the video-out function has been disabled for the iPod Nano G3, iPod Classic and iPod Touch models).

In addition to the remote control, the Unison i-XD Dock includes a USB cable, a 3.5 mm to RCA adaptor and an S-Video cable as well as a 2 metre power adaptor. The Unison i-XD Dock is of sturdy construction, and available in your choice of two colours (black or white). Small enough to carry along on holiday or anywhere else one may wish to go, the Unison i-XD Dock measures only 9.5x6.9x2.5 centimetres – slightly smaller than Apple’s own iPod dock.

Set-up and integration with one’s personal entertainment equipment is a dawdle when using the Unison i-XD Dock’s USB capabilities, particularly when using it for video. Once the device is hooked up to the telly, imply place Video Settings on TV Out, select standard PAL format, and Bob’s your uncle. One should of course not expect high-definition video quality from the Unison i-XD Dock – resolution is only 640x480 pixels, after all – but the picture compares favourably to old-style VHS analogue video.

The Unison i-XD Dock’s remote control has thirteen different buttons for all the standard functions, including complete control over iPod menus, making navigation a small matter. The only fault with the entire setup is that the Unison i-XD Dock’s display is too small to be seen from more than a few feet away, so although the remote has a range of a dozen metres or so, one really must be close to the device in order to employ it effectively.

You’ll also need to keep a close eye on your remote – approximately the size of an electronic bank card, it is all-too-easily lost in a piece of furniture or in one’s pocket.

Nonetheless, for the low cost and high level of function, we believe the Unison i-XD Dock to be an excellent value and a useful addition to one’s collection of electronic devices.
