Tips on Basement Plumbing and Renovation

Of all the places to build in a home, the basement can be the most problematic. Of all the phases of a construction project in a basement, the plumbing phase can be the hardest to accomplish for a number of reasons. To begin with, any waste water in general, usually has to be pumped out. Secondly, basements tend to be very unforgiving when it comes to leaks, even very minor ones.

How to Avoid Problems

One way to sidestep the majority of the problems that a basement can present for a plumber is to not plumb in anything that will need a drain such as a sink, toilet or a shower. Secondly, more problems can be avoided by not pluming anything in concrete such as the floor or concrete side walls.

Buy a Complete Unit

This means that all that you are going to be plumbing is the sump drainage system. If this is the route that you are going to take, then the best advise that you can get is to buy a completely contained sump pump system that comes in a “plug in basin unit”. Trying to patch together your own system can end up costing you more for a system that isn't as reliable as you would get in ready built unit.

Practice Makes Perfect

Another good tip for aspiring plumbers that are planning on plumbing anything in their home is to get a little practice in before they start in on the real thing. That means that you have to take your torch, some copper pipe and solder into the back yard and fool with it until you know what you are doing.

Use the Correct Glue and Pipe Dope

Always make sure that you are using the right materials when you are gluing any pipes. This means that you must never substitute anything for pipe dope or glue for PVC or any type of metal or plastic pipe. Also, make sure that you pressure test everything after you are done and no matter how small a leak is, you must track it down and fix it.
