Being overweight has a host of negatives associated with it including greater probability of diabetes, cancer and heart disease. In this MedPage Today article we learn that being overweight also is linked to acid reflux (more formally known as gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD.)
In a study performed by physicians from Boston University and published in the June 1 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, reported on here by MedPage Today, we learn that weight gain increases the probability of GERD in women, regardless of their current weight category. In other words, the more weight you gain, the more likely you are to suffer from GERD, regardless of your current weight. And, not surprisingly, the study found the opposite was true: lose weight and you will reduce your exposure to GERD.
Those women with a BMI, over 30, the formal threshold for obesity, were 2 to 3 times as likely to report GERD symptoms as were those in the normal weight category.
According to the article, the key finding from the study is that it shows that the risk of GERD symptoms appears to be directly linked to weight gain regardless of the individual's current weight.
