City of Philadelphia Selects Zipcar

                                                                                         

The world's largest car-sharing company announced yesterday that it managed to notch the bid from the City of Brotherly Love. Zipcar will provide car sharing for City workers in Philadelphia. This affiliation indicates the City's dedication to shifting the way people and their employees’ progress in the city of Philadelphia. Car sharing has helped the City get rid of roughly 330 vehicles from its fleet since 2004. The City also plans to carry on reorganizing its fleet through car sharing. Zipcar was chosen as Philadelphia's car-sharing provider by being the lowest bidder in a spirited sealed proposal.

"We commend the City for their thought leadership on urban transportation. We look forward to providing city employees with cars on demand and introducing them to our industry-leading technology and member experience," says Mark Norman, President and COO of Zipcar.

The Auto Channel reported that Zipcar's assistance to the City will start on first day of July 2008 and will continue through March 31, 2009. It will be renewed for three extra years. City employees will have the right to use to Zipcar's various fleet range over the course of the contract which will include hybrids, standard sedans with their standard auto parts, and small SUVs. This will guarantee the access to the most suitable car with its best auto parts for their task. Some latest studies by Zipcar signify that every Zipcar acquires 15 vehicles off the road and Zipcar associates account that they drive a typical of 4,000 miles per year, a fairly small amount is lessen when they have their own car. Members also report saving an average of $435 per month compared to the standard rate of owning and driving a car in inner-city surroundings.

Car sharing enhances existing programs in the City and allows us to have a smaller fleet of vehicles and provide the same level of service while saving tax payers money," says Rina Cutler, Deputy Mayor of Transportation and Utilities for the City of Philadelphia.

In addition to the City of Philadelphia, Zipcar is at present working with over 35 municipalities and government organizations throughout the US, Canada, and the UK, which also include the city of Portland, Oregon, Washington Metro Transit Authority (Washington DC), District Department of Transportation (Washington, DC), Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, King County (Seattle), and Transport for London.
