The formula for writing a successful research paper is simple and attainable. It is basically a question of organizing one's thought, materials and time properly. The methods below have been proven by many to be effective in making one's journey in writing a research paper more educational and satisfying.

Start Immediately. The problem with some people is that they wait for too long before beginning their research paper. They often spare just a few weeks for the project. People who do this will have difficulty finding good research materials and will have the tendency to lose their focus because of other assignments or obligations. Those who wait for the last minute will produce substandard work.

Choose an Interesting Topic. Manageability is the key. Topics that are too technical or specialized often have limited source materials. A research writer should choose a topic that is narrow enough to be manageable and can be treated thoroughly within the given time frame. And of course, a writer should choose a topic that will interest and challenge him.

Gather Information. Maximize the library. With its vast reading resources - catalogs, almanacs, newspapers, encyclopedias and magazines – the library is a treasure trove of information that will help create a successful research paper. The web is also a useful means where writers can gather important information for his topic.

Come Up with a Question. After organizing the gathered data and much critical thinking, a writer should then find a question for his research paper. Questions that will answer “how” and “why” will provide the argument that will give life to his work.

Write a First Draft. In writing a first draft, the writer composes a detailed sentence outline. The introduction is the most important part of the first draft; it should firmly grab the attention of the readers. It communicates the subject of the research paper and how the writer will tackle it. At this stage of the research paper, the writer just goes with the flow of his ideas and writes non-stop with the guidance of his organized notes.

Revise the Draft. This is when the writer reads his work to make sure his spelling, grammar and punctuation is perfect. Often a writer will not see his own mistakes, so it would be better if he allows someone else to proofread his work. Revising also involves double checking the facts and figures that support the argument of the research paper.

Produce a Final Paper. A well-written research paper is clean, neat and attractive. And most importantly, done a day or two before its deadline.
