Overview

Advertising Disclaimer Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is a common persistent infection of the foot caused by a microscopic fungus that lives on dead tissue of the hair, toenails, and outer skin layers (dermatophyte). These fungi thrive in warm, dark, moist environments such as shoes, stockings, and the floors of public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools.

Many people will develop athlete's foot at least once in their lives. Some will get it more often. To avoid athlete's foot, the following advice should help:
- Wash your feet every day, or even twice, with a mild soap paying special attention to the area between the toes.

Athlete's Foot Causes

Athlete's foot was relatively uncommon in humans before we began wearing shoes. It is now found frequently in adolescents and adults.

A fungus known as a dermatophyte causes athlete's foot.

·This fungus can be contracted by sharing the shoes of an infected person.
Athletes Foot Symptoms:

What is athlete's foot? What are the symptoms of athlete's foot? Let's start with the basic of just what athlete's foot is and what causes it. If you have athlete's foot then you have a skin infection that is caused by fungus. Trichophyton, the fungus that causes Athlete's Foot, arises when your feet stay warm, moist and irritated. The athlete's foot fungus can be spread from person to person by contact with socks, clothes, or floors in which the infected person has either walked on or worn. Almost 70% of the population will experience athlete's foot at some point in their lives.

Is it serious?
“If left untreated, the fungus can spread to the toe nails, causing thickening and yellowing of the nail, which is much harder to treat,” says Shuja. “Fungal infections are highly contagious and can spread to anywhere on your skin – to your scalp, hands and even your groin, especially if you use the same towel for your feet as for the rest of your body.”

Self-Care at Home
· Many over-the-counter antifungal medications can be applied to the affected area. These creams should be used sparingly but regularly, at least once a day. An application the size of a chocolate chip should be adequate to cover the entire bottom of your foot.
·It is important to keep your feet clean and dry. Wear clean absorbent socks made of natural fibers, such as cotton, and change them during the day if your feet become moist or sweaty.

Suggestions for Athletes foot

Natural fiber footwear should be used
Always keep your feet dry. Use hair dryer to dry your feet rather than towels. Use some antiperspirant to keep your toe fingers dry. Use antifungal powder rather than antifungal cream. Use cotton socks. Clean your shoes from inside using a paper or a cotton cloth. Use only natural fiber footwear. Use mild soaps and avoid deodorant soap.

What can be done at home?
· Wash the feet every day and allow them to dry properly before putting on shoes and socks. You should use a separate towel to dry your feet. To avoid passing the infection on you should not share these towels with anyone else.
· Wear socks made of cotton or wool, and change them at least twice a day or when they have become damp.
