And so the action begins…one of the most important ATP tennis events will take place at the red sandy Philippe Chatrier and Suzanne Lenglen courts of Roland Garros within a few days. The second Grand Slam of the year which is known as the summit of the clay court season will start on Sunday May 25th and it is already on scheduled that 16 more matches will be played during the first round that very day.

There is no doubt the French Open is the most awaited tennis event in Europe; as such a tournament gathers the best 100+ men and women in the sport of tennis. This year in particular the top seeded players have been facing unusual situations which have certainly altered the probabilities of the possible outcomes we expected and were sure about a year ago. I am referring to tennis number one the Swiss Federer, the Spaniard number two Nadal, and the young upbeat Serbian Novak Djokovic.

What are their chances? First, we have Federer who faces the worst title drought since 2004 as so far in the season he has only won one single title which is not a Master Series one. We basically saw him revive early in May at the ATP Italian Open in Rome where he inexplicably lost to Stepanek in the semi finals. Nevertheless; we saw him rise high in Hamburg reaching the final to defend his title but once again he was stopped by the French Grand Slam title holder 21-year-old Nadal. If Federer chooses to win the French Open he needs to detach of his baseline strategy over the Spaniard…otherwise; the story could repeat itself again as we have already seen in Monte Carlo and Hamburg.

The three times Roland Garros champion; Rafael Nadal has the Serbian stepping on his toes as he is getting closer and closer to the second spot. But; we have witnessed how the Spaniard reacts when pressure is upon him. And from the tennis players pursuing the title he is the one with the best chances to make history in the French city by conquering his fourth one. Up to this point, Nadal’s first round opponent has not been released as there are qualifying games still at play.

On the other hand; there is Novak – who keeps building up his background as the year moves forward; the Australian Grand Slam, the Indian Wells ATP Masters Series and his most recent win in the Italian city in Rome…and let’s not forget his semi final match against Nadal in Hamburg. No questions he will be one of the few last men standing and who could probably meet the Spaniard in the semi finals at Roland Garros. In the first round Novak faces German Denis Gremelmayr.

Seeded number four the Russian Nicolay Davydenko meets the Swede Johansson while the second best Spaniard David Ferrer who is seeded number five faces Steve Darcis from Belgium. Additionally, the Argentinean six seeded David Nalbandian will meet countryman Carlos Berlocq in the first round.

Paris is the perfect scenario for the display of talent that will shortly unveil as the players get ready for another round of glories and despair…either way history will be made whether the King holds on or falls to his best rival.
