Everyday you hop on the internet and you're surfing around, never suspecting that your information is being tapped every time you click a link. Whenever you open a search engine and type in the keywords for your search, you are unknowingly allowing the search engine to access, download, store, analyze and even sell your demographic, ISP and search-related information for advertising and marketing purposes. Most major search engines will tell you that they access this information solely for the purpose of creating a more comprehensive search engine for its users. Of course you believe them...but how do they know that you're thinking about Hershey's Kisses today? You haven't searched that term for over 6 months.
Major search engines, like Google, Yahoo and MSN live engage in data mining--the practice of collecting and analyzing data and then selling the results to the highest bidder--all for the purpose of getting you to buy more items so they can sell more advertising. A complex system of link tracking and other information tracking pulls information about everything you do from the moment you enter the search term into the engine to the moment you process your credit card at Amazon.com. This information system even keeps data on whether you've returned the items you purchased.
Advertisers pay top dollar for information about where you come from, how often you use the search engine and what you're searching for. They use this information to better target you at your times of vulnerability, when you are most likely to purchase their items.
"What about my privacy?" you ask. "Doesn't that count for anything anymore?"
The FCC has attempted to pass regulations in the past governing the use and timely disposal of user information mined from search engine databanks.
Unfortunately, there's little the FCC can do to enforce to these regulations and many major search engines will keep your information in their databanks for up to 18 months or longer, analyzing your decisions and searches over and over again and selling the information to advertisers left and right.
What can you do to avoid having your information used this way?
Well, you could stop using the internet all together.
Or, you could start using Unamoo.
Unamoo is a new search engine that is dedicated to keeping users safe from unsavory adult content, malware, phishing sites and even the unknown use of your personal information.
While Unamoo can see your ISP, they will never sell your demographic information to any advertisers. In fact, while the information is available to Unamoo just as it is available to other search engines, Unamoo does not even avalyze your demographic information. There is no need for the site to do this, since they do not intend to mine out your data to advetisers and marketing companies.
Unamoo only looks at your search terms, repeat visits and time spent on the search engine. They'll never share any information they collect. Your information will be used purely for improving the search engine. But what exactly does that all mean?
As far as your search criteria go, Unamoo will only use your keywords to create a better search engine. If you search for "grilling tools" and no or very few search results come up on Unamoo, they'll be able to see that your search wasn't complete and they'll start scouring for more sites to match your search terms. The site also wants to know that they're doing a good job, so they'll take it to heart if you use the search engine once and never come back. They're working hard to make sure you want to come back time and time again, and stick around a while when you're there.
Additionally, the site analyzes raw data on a regular basis and discards all of your information as soon as they are finished analyzing it and they only use the information that's relevant to making a better product for you.
Unamoo will never do anything to harm you or invade your privacy. That's the beauty of using a search engine that's made by you and for you.
