Mastering the skill of dissertation writing is crucial for any person that is pursuing higher levels of education. There are actually four different stages of dissertation writing. By mastering and following each of the four steps, you can ensure that your dissertation will be respected and well-received.

The first stage of dissertation writing is the planning (or thinking) stage. During this phase of the dissertation writing process, it is very important that you are open to all of your ideas. If you eliminate your ideas too quickly, you may have trouble during the later stages of your dissertation writing. Another key element of this phase is to write all of your ideas down. Failing to write down all of your ideas will inevitably lead to at least one great idea being forgotten about. It is also important to avoid the influences of others. Try to brainstorm about your dissertation without worrying about the opinions of your peers or advisors. If possible, you should also try to conduct a small preliminary research study during this first phase of dissertation writing. Doing so will allow you to solidify the direction and focus of your actual dissertation.

The next stage of dissertation writing is preparing the actual proposal. If you begin this stage but find it to be extremely overwhelming, chances are you did not spend enough time brainstorming during phase one. Once you do feel confident enough to write your proposal, there are a few tips that can greatly help you. The first thing you should do is read through someone else’s proposal. Although you should never consider any type of plagiarism, simply reading someone else’s proposal will help you get a mental picture of what your proposal should ultimately look like. Additionally, make sure that your proposal includes a comprehensive review of the literature. Finally, make sure that your proposal is organized around a set of questions, and don’t forget to craft a title for your proposal!

Once you have completed your proposal, its time to begin the actual process of dissertation writing. As long as you have been thorough during the first two stages of this process, the actual dissertation writing should be easier than you might initially think. Contrary to popular belief, dissertation writing does not need to be a linear process. Instead, dissertation writing is most effective when done by beginning with the areas that you are most comfortable with. Additionally, you should also take your time during this phase. Although that may seem obvious, many people do not realize how long proper dissertation writing can actually take. When you are planning out how much time your dissertation writing will take, make sure you give yourself enough time to take an extended break. Trying to complete all of your dissertation writing during a very short period of time will have a negative impact on the overall quality of your work.

Ironically enough, completing the actual dissertation writing is not the last step of this four part process. The last thing you will have to do is defend your dissertation in front of four or five other people. No matter how good your dissertation writing skills are, you still need to thoroughly prepare for your dissertation defense. The easiest way to begin this is by attending at least one defense before your own. This will give you a good idea of what you actually need to do. Additionally, the best way to prepare for your dissertation presentation is to approach it as an educational presentation. Doing this will allow you to properly structure and organize your dissertation defense. By breaking down your dissertation writing into four parts, the entire process will be easier, and your final work will come out extremely well.
