The tradition of playing cards is traced to China, having originated as far back as the year 900 of the Common Era, while gambling is believed to have existed since 2300 Before the Common Era. Over time, an incredible variety of card games have evolved, including the well-loved game of blackjack.

Blackjack is believed to have developed in France and is based on other French casino card games dating back to the 1700s. At the time blackjack was created, it was called “21” after the optimal numerical total of cards a player seeks to receive from the dealer to secure a win. However, the term “blackjack” refers to the ultimate card combination of the ace of spades and the jack of spades, which equals 21 but is also, the blackjack. Since then, the blackjack game has certainly gotten around.

21 Blackjack has been played in the United States since the 1800s where gambling was actually a legal enterprise from the 19th century and into the early 20th century, with gambling illegalization movements beginning in Nevada around 1910. By the 1930s, however, blackjack gambling started to become legal only in casinos in Las Vegas and in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but is now played in casinos all over the United States. However, with the development of online gambling since the 1990s, blackjack gambling now spans the entire globe vis-à-vis online blackjack.

In a game of basic blackjack a group of players sits at a table, makes their blackjack betting wagers and then each player receives two cards from the dealer. There are two types of blackjack. In the London Deal variation, each player receives a first card face up. In the Nevada Deal blackjack game, each player receives a card from the dealer face down. After this first round of dealt cards, the players receive another card face down. After which, the dealer deals himself two cards, one face up and the other face down. The face up card initiates the players’ decision of whether or not to ask for another card from the dealer if the player believes he can beat the dealer’s card total without going over, or, in blackjack terminology, going “bust.”

Over time, avid blackjack players have learned the blackjack strategy known as card counting which guides on how to make calculations and predictions as to whether or not the request for another card will spell win or defeat against the dealer. This has brought the game of blackjack to another dimension and caliber of casino games. Today, those who are interested in playing blackjack and learning more about this game that is approximately 300 years old, turn to the Internet to tap into this unlimited resource of information and guidance in playing blackjack. A variety of websites exist today that offer blackjack players and those who are just learning, a free blackjack download and blackjack tips to get people up to snuff in this centuries old card game culture that keeps people coming back for more.
