Security is a key concern of most people, especially with the upswing of violence we see in the news. The need to feel secure seems to be harder and harder to achieve, and the ability to provide security can become complicated for those who travel frequently and stay in hotel rooms, live in multiple housing units such as apartments, or who have gone off to school and find themselves living in college dorms.

Fortunately, there are a number of options available in portable security devices. These handy gadgets are able to provide anyone with a layer of protection to ensure the feeling of safety, and can be used in a number of housing situations.

1.Dual Purpose Alarms

These versatile portable alarm systems can be carried as a personal alarm, or can be hung on a doorknob to allow use as a burglar alarm for the home, hotel room, or college dorm. A motion sensor within the device alerts to any movement of the door or doorknob and emits an ear piercing screecher normally in the range of 120 decibels, which is at the threshold of comfort for the human ear. A pin inside the device can be pulled to activate the alarm when it is being used as a personal protection device. These portable alarms typically work on any non-metallic door.

2.Volumetric Alarms

Designed to work within closed spaces of up to 1,000 square feet, a volumetric alarm monitors the air pressure within a room. Once activated, the alarm will emit an attention-grabbing, ear pierching screecher noise if the portable device sensed a change in air pressure, which would be caused by the opening or closing of a door or window. These devices have an advantage over radar or infrared sensors since they allow movement within the room, even when armed. These are great in areas where there are pets or small children.

3.Magnetic Alarms

The base of a small magnetic alarm is secured to a door or window frame, and the actuator is attached to the door or window panel. The device senses magnetic affinity between the two parts, and activates when the connection is broken. These magnetic door and window alarms are perfect for sliding glass doors and windows, which can be difficult to protect with other types of portable alarm devices.

4.Mini Room Alarms

These portable devices use infrared technology, and they are perfect for a hotel room or college dorms. When activated, an infrared triangle forms around the interior of the room, providing coverage for an entire room. An ear piercing screecher alarm will sound when the infrared signature is interrupted.

5.Doorstop Alarms

A wedge-shaped device, the doorstop alarm braces the door from the inside, preventing it from being opened. These ear piercing screechers are perfect for a hotel room or college dorm. An alarm within the doorstop senses movement or vibrations that may be associated with someone trying to force the door open. When the device senses the movement, the high-pitched, ear piercing screecher sounds.
Any of the devices listed here are highly portable and battery operated, making them ideal for people who travel frequently and stay in hotel rooms, live in a college dorm room, or live in an apartment or condo where traditional home security systems cannot be installed. Much success has also been reported among parents who use these security devices to prevent wayward teenagers from sneaking out of the house at night. These devices are typically inexpensive, making them an affordable method to ensure increased personal security no matter where you happen to be.
