Apart from sail and marlin fishing in gulf of Papagayo rooster is the target more appreciated by fishermen who come down to this region looking for a Guanacaste fishing adventure. With average weight between 50 to 80 pounds, Rooster fish is a great opponent for any professional or amateur fisherman. An 80 lbs rooster fish is fighter than a 80 lbs sailfish.

It is not migratory specie, but territorial, Papagayo Rooster fishing is consistent year round, but a higher number of fishes are caught when water conditions are specially goods, not matter time of the year.

In gulf of Papagayo, Roosterfish can be found close to the shore on beaches like Coco, Panama, Potrero, Tamarindo and others. However, there are places well known for local fishermen where this specie is more abundant: Catalina islands, south of gulf of Papagayo and mainly in Bat islands and Playa Blanca, right to the north of the gulf. Roosterfish in gulf of Papagayo can be done in water no deeper than 100 to 120 feet until close to the shore at 10 or 15 feet. Their habitat is in tropical waters, no cool, not warms water, the fishing conditions are especially favorable when waters are some cloudy, no totally clear and not dirty at all where fish can't see bait.

Rooster Fishing in Papagayo using lures is difficult, so bait is needed to catch someone, specially live bait (bonito, Lady Fish or rainbow runner); if live bait is not possible then butterfly cut is a special technique used: to cut the bonito fish begging from its tail to the head side by side trying to remove all its bone. Maybe the odor to tuna or how it move make this bait special attractive for Rooster.

All gulf of Papagayo local and Tamarindo fishing region sportfishermen practice catch and release to preserve the specie, we ask our clients not to keep any rooster. Take as much photo as possible but return them to sea, let keep specie for future and for our sons.
