This past week Jason Castro got kicked off of “American Idol.” Most viewers believe that Castro had been lucky to make it this far. However, there’s more to Jason Castro than immediately meets the eye, and that’s why the young singer seemingly overreached and made “Idol’s” top four.
To the first-time viewer, there isn’t much about Jason Castro that screams “American Idol.” He is a twenty-something white male with dreadlocks, not exactly the squeaky-clean image the Idol contestants usually portray. Attitude-wise he is a very relaxed and low-key individual; some people use the word “stoner” to describe him, and whether or not Castro actually participates in illegal drug use, that’s a pretty accurate adjective to describe his demeanor.
When it comes to singing, Jason Castro isn’t the strongest. In fact, of the contestants that made Idol’s final ten, some would say that Castro was the worst. He certainly wasn’t one of the four best singers. He lacks the vocal power or range of some of the stronger contestants, and he has been known to stumble over words and even forget lyrics. During this past week’s performance -- the one that got him eliminated from the show -- Castro forgot the lyrics to Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” and began mumbling incoherently.
So if Castro doesn’t have the prototypical “Idol” look, and he’s not a very strong singer, and he forgets lyrics, then how did he make the final four? It’s because he was able to build a large, loyal fan base early in the competition. In each season of “Idol,” there are usually 2 or 3 contestants whose singing really stands out from the crowd. These singers naturally get very far in the competition. But the next 100 most talented singers sort of fall into an area where any one of them could succeed. From a talent standpoint there’s not a huge difference between Jason Castro and the other top ten (or even top fifty) contestants.
What Castro does have is star appeal. With his charisma, laid-back personality and smile, he was able to gain many fans early on in the process. Anyone that has ever watched “American Idol” knows that voters can be very loyal and unwavering when it come to voting for their favorite singers. Sure, a bad performance will hurt anyone, but many singers are able to overcome a bad week or two by developing extremely loyal fan bases early on. As mentioned before, a lot of these singers are equally talented, so things like charisma, personality and likeability really come into play. Jason Castro had all of these things and that’s why he was able to make it to the top four of “American Idol” despite not having what most would consider top four level talent.
