Greying hair, like wrinkled skin, is a manifestation of the ageing process. The main cause of the greying hair is the genetic inheritance. When hair starts greying permaturely, it can cause a great deal of anxiety and hopelessness. But in half of all Caucasoid people, half the hairs on the scalp are grey by the age of 50. However, as a person grows older and reaches middle age, more and more of these pigment cells die and colour is lost from individual hairs.

Greying is linked to pigment cells called melanocytes, Science reports. Hair loses its colour and turns silver when cells that spawn melanocytes die off, the team from Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute told the journal. Melanocytes also go awry and multiply uncontrollably in deadly skin cancers so the team hopes the findings could lead to a way to stop tumour growth. When black chromatophore is present in sufficient amounts, the hair is black. When black chromatophore is reduced over time through the aging process, the hair becomes grey. Further, if our hair cannot get enough nutrition from the blood from poor diet, stress etc., this will also cause graying of the hair.

There are now new coloring products that do not contain any actual colorings or dyes and that is indeed the thing that separates these new products from others that can be purchased nowadays. The common ingredient shared by these new coloring products is something called lead acetate. This acetate ingredient is supposed to stick to the natural hair and will eventually return the hair to its natural color. Professionals from the Good Housekeeping Institute have been enthusiastic about this new development on the hair care market.

The hair is an appendage of the skin. It is composed of the same kind of cells as are found in the outer layer of the skin, known as epidermis. It grows from a hair follicle which is a deep recess in the epidermis. The sebaceous glands of the scalp secrete an oily substance called sebum, which is the source of nutrition, lustre and blackness of the hair. The hair cannot be fed externally, for such nourishment as the scalp requires must come to it from the bloodstream.

Gray hair is one of the most familiar signs of aging. The age when greying starts depends on one's genetic inheritance. But in half of all Caucasoid people, half the hairs on the scalp are grey by the age of 50.The loss of hair color is due to a gradual fall in melanin production in the hair bulb. If you look at the hairs on a greying head you find a full range of color, from the normal shade through to white along each hair, and also from one hair to another. Usually people notice their first gray hairs near their temples. Then the grayness spreads to the crown, and later to the back of the head.

Older people tend to develop grey hair because their hair follicles produce less pigment and the hair becomes colorless. Grey hair is considered to be a characteristic of normal aging. The age at which this occurs varies from person to person, but in general nearly everyone 75 years or older has grey hair, and in general men tend to become grey at younger ages than women.
