The game was filled with thrilling plays throughout the match even though neither party was able to score; both teams put up quite the challenge and neither was willing to give in. Penalty shoot outs are always very nerve wrecking as you never know what the outcome could be.
Firorentina was dominating and Sasa Papac cleared Mario Alberto Santana’s amazing back heel just off of the goal line while Adrian Mutu and Christian Vieri were also close and Whittaker forced a well done save on the other side.
There was no end to the pressure being imposed on both teams and goalkeeper Neil Alexander was unable to stop a dangerous cross from Massimo Gobbi and Papac was then forced to a speedy and headed clearance.
Marco Donadel’s participation was very short and he was replaced by Zdrayko Kuzmanovic very quickly. Fiorentina discussed how to stump on the Rangers defense during their halftime and continued to apply pressure when they game resumed.
The club wanted to wear the Rangers out and Giampaolo Pazzini along with Tomas Ujfalsuti tried to narrow over.
The Rangers extraordinary defense is what prevented the Italians from scoring on their own territory and caused Sebastien Frey to act on his first save with 76 minutes into the game; even though he had some help from about 14 yards beyond by the goalkeeper.
Vieri came so very close in becoming the hero of the match when he touched for the first time after being added as a substitute, but he unfortunately sat on the ball in place of turning it into the net from just three yards out.
Frey hard-pressed away a very well-twisted attempt from Whittaker at a complete stretch while the Rangers kept trying to put their opponents in jeopardy on the break, however, the home team detained the bigger risk as the game went into extra time.
Vieri missed the goal with three efforts, despite the fact Zdravko Kuzmanovic’s header took off by a hair's breadth wide.
The Italians had a good chance of making it when the Rangers team was cut down to ten men and Cousin was previously reserved and head-butted Fabio Liverani and only to receive a second yellow card.
Under all that anxiety the Rangers decided to tough it out and play out the last 10 minutes to take the game to penalty; they were happy indeed about the final outcome.
During extra time Cousin was sent off but the still no goal had been made forcing the teams to an astonishing penalty shoot out where Nacho Novo kicked in the winning goal.
It has been a long 26-years since the Rangers have been in a European final since the 1972 win they took home the Winner’s Cup.
