Britney Spears Going Back to TV

                                                                                         

It has just been announced that Britney Spears will return to the hit show “How I Met Your Mother” to take another shot at the role she played earlier this year. Britney appeared on the show in early 2008, playing the role of a secretary.

The appearance was considered a big deal because everything that Britney Spears does is considered a big deal. In fact, just the other day Britney Spears sneezed and they interrupted a broadcast of the Presidential debate to show reactions to the sneezing. One reporter called it “the most shocking sneeze of 2008 and perhaps the decade.” I’m joking of course but this isn’t that far-fetched. People love following Britney Spears and discussing every aspect of her life. Whether Britney is that interesting or tabloid readers just have no real friends to gossip around remains to be determined.

Although Britney’s appearance on “How I Met Your Mother” was over-hyped, she did a good job. Most fans of the show enjoyed her appearance, and even people who just tuned in to see a potential train wreck were pleasantly surprised. Britney was funny and charismatic, and the show is well-written so the plot was good.

Britney’s return to “How I Met Your Mother” marks another step forward in her career. After her breakdown in the beginning of 2007 and the subsequent downward spiral that lasted until about October, Britney has really turned things around and is headed in the right direction. She released a successful CD that has already had three hit singles (and should have a couple more). She appeared on “How I Met Your Mother” to solid reviews. She has worked towards regaining custody of her children. And for the most part, she has stayed away from controversy and scandal in the past 6 months.

As sad as it is, most people find this disappointing. Britney was headed for sure disaster, and some people had her pegged as dead in the water. Yet she turned things around and is starting to make positive contributions to society instead of just beating cars with umbrellas and appearing in tabloid headlines. Some people are happy to see another human being get things together, yet so many people are disappointed. They loved watching Britney’s life collapse because it was a soap opera. To most people, Britney’s life is better than any show on TV. You can’t write some of the stuff that she does if you tried. People love watching the drama unfold and forget that Britney Spears is an actual person. That’s the truly awful part of tabloids; that they encourage people to destroy their lives and the lives of others because it makes for good entertainment.

I can’t speak for everyone, or even the majority, but I think it’s good to see Britney Spears get her life back on track.
