School bags today come in a variety of styles - boys use backpacks, holdalls, laptop cases, briefcases and record bags and girls typically extend the possibilities with a wide array of latest fashion handbags. But was this always the case and what will we see in the future?

Starting in the 70s, the most common school bag was the leather satchel and briefcase. Moving on to the 80s saw the emergence of lightweight and strong polyester materials which made for some great school backpacks. By the 90s, the market started to see significant differentiation between bags carried by boys and girls. Some girls started to use ladies handbags in place of a typical school bag.

Today, a big range of bags are used. It is a challenge for the school bag providers to keep pace and maintain consumer satisfaction. I encourage designers to continue to be innovative and provide new designs alongside traditional styles.

The biggest change to this dynamic market, however, looks certain to be yet to come. The virtual schoolbag, discussed by the Education Minister in 2002, involves school children storing their work electronically in their own virtual school bag. School work is then accessible on any PC with an internet connection. Of course, we are not at this stage yet so there is plenty of life still left in traditional bags! It will be interesting to see how today’s fashion conscious young people drive the market forward.
