Wildlife is such a fascinating aspect of nature and to have some of the species in your backyard is such a privilege. As wildlife areas are lost to development, wildlife depends more and more on homeowners to provide food.

Landscaping with native plants will help the wildlife survive in your backyard. It not only provides better food and cover for native wildlife than do no-native plants but on an average require less care and resources to maintain.

Food for wildlife is easy to provide. A variety of food sources will invite a variety of wildlife. Food sources include seeds, berries, nuts, flower nectar, insects and other wildlife.

Choose a variety of plants that produce seed or fruit at different times of the year. Most songbirds require insects in their diet, so do your best to avoid the use of insecticides as these are toxic to most wildlife.

The ideal wildlife landscaping plan supplies as much food as possible through a variety of vegetation to meet the year-round needs of wildlife species.

Water: Not only is water essential for drinking but also for bathing. You can have a simple birdbath or ground watering device, like
a small pond with an area large enough to support plants that grow in water as well as around the edge.

Shelter: All wild life needs a safe place where they are free from danger. Shelter is also important for nesting and resting. Most animals will seek shelter in trees, shrubs, rock walls or hollow logs.
