For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox; with so many rumors about it's use, more facts need to be available about what it is and what it does. To help with this, we need to step back a few decades to when this substance was first researched and used. Botulinum toxin was first researched back in the 1960's; originally the purpose of this was to treat neurological disorders.

Then a few decades later in 1989, the Federal Drug Administration in America finally approved its use to treat disorders associated with vision; patients suffering with uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes were given this and sometimes those who suffered with wrinkles as well. By the new millennium it had been approved for a number of other conditions including cervical dystonia; it was found to be effective at helping patients with neck and shoulder contractions but other eye disorders were included at the same time. In all the research that was going on with botox, doctors had found that it was effective at reducing frown lines around the eyebrow area; following this the FDA finally recognized the implications and agreed its commercial use in 2002.

Botox has a paralyzing affect when it is injected into areas of the forehead which control the muscles that cause frowning; in time frown lines gradually soften and subside if sufficient treatments are given. Continued treatments mean in many cases the lines disappear and now the same treatment is used on other areas of the face like the crows' feet, laughter lines and other facial wrinkles. To allay any fears about injection toxin into our bodies these injections only contain a diluted and purified version of the poison; this same botulism can make us very ill but when use in cosmetic surgery it is a purified form the Botulinum toxin.

This popularity is due to the fact that we all have wrinkles and lines (increasing with age) when we smile, laugh and make other facial movements which are the result of muscles in the face. When we are young and our skin is more elastic, these lines do not show but as we age the constant use of facial muscles leaves us with lines; many ‘skin age reduction cream' manufacturers have tried to produce creams that reduce facial line but this is the only treatment that works, currently. Muscles in the area of the botox injection become paralyzed temporarily so they cannot move fully; many people believe that overuse leaves the recipient with a look similar to that of a mannequin.

Because frown line, wrinkles and facial creases have all but disappeared, it provides the user with a look of someone much younger. However, this cosmetic treatment is still expensive; the average cost of just one injection in the United States ranges from a few hundred dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars, depending on where the injection is used. It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn't seem to concern those people who are using it at this moment.
