In the midst of the environmental issues we are facing in the modern day and the larger costs that are put on us by our natural reserves being depleted. It is of value considering some of the alternatives to take the responsible ecological path and reduce the amount we have to spend. The issue that I am looking at today is the storage of water otherwise known as rainwater collection to reduce water bills and afford you with an amount of water even in the times of a bad drought or a hosepipe ban.

The first item you have to think about is that the run off water is coming of a roof that isnt covered in a substance that will in some way pollute the water. So if a roof is painted, tarred etc. it may have detergents and other chemicals in the rainwater that come out of the treatments applied to the roof. Another of the things to look at is the guttering, if it is made from lead (or the roof for that matter) then avoid using the run off.

Collection tanks for collecting rainwater harvested using guttering can either be above or below the ground. Some things to think about in the use of collection tanks include provision of an satisfactory enclosure to minimize contamination from human, animal or other environmental contaminants, and a tight cover to stop algal growth. Depending on the size of your home and the amount of rainfall in your district, you can store a large amount of rainwater from your own roof. This additional contained water not only lessens your water bills, but becomes a garden-saver all through times of droughts and the water restrictions.

With the basic models of rainwater storage a hose can be connected to the tank, and a small motorized pump allows hand or sprinkler watering. Rainwater that is channeled back into homes for showers and toilets is run through filtering and treatment systems to remove any organisms and small bits of material that may have washed into the tanks. When rain first falls on a roof, it will flow down into the gutters, dust and other foreign substances. All of this can be removed by filtration and then held ready for when you need it.
