Acid reflux in infants is a common condition just as in adults. The condition involves the flowing back of stomach contents back to the throat. Not all infants get to suffer from this disease for along period of time. Mostly, the condition gets to be noticed during their first three months and by the time they reach the age of about one year, acid reflux is said to gradually disappear.
Spitting accompanied with burping is a common sign of acid reflux in infants. This happens because food content in the stomach is let to flow back into the throat via the esophagus. Stomach acids together with gas accompany this food content and as the acid reaches the throat, the infant naturally spits in order to relieve himself from the burning sensation caused by the acid. The refluxed gas from the stomach causes burping as it reaches the throat.
Restless crying of the baby may also mean a presence of acid reflux in the infant. The reason here is, as the refluxed acid gets to the throat, it triggers a burning irritating feeling which disturbs your child. Without words to pass the message, the only way the infant can communicate is through crying to catch your attention so that you can sort him out. Given this reason, do not always be quick to shout at your baby telling them to keep quiet whenever you hear them crying.
You can prevent this problem from occurring to your young ones by feeding them in small bits regularly. This will for sure prevent the infant from having a full stomach which makes it easy for stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus and find its way into the throat. By stopping this reflux of food contents, stomach acid is prevented form reaching the throat and this exempts the infant from suffering the aftermath of acid reflux.
Prone positioning which involves laying the infant on his stomach, also helps solve the problem of acid influx in infants. Position the infant on its stomach and incline him in a 30 degree angle. A flow back of acid back to the throat is made to be impossible as it will be pulled back to the stomach by the gravitational force from the stomach. This remedy helps you kill two birds with one stone because while you try to solve the acid reflux problem, you get to enjoy your night sleep as the baby won't keep on waking up so often.
Whoever said that kids including infants are small angels guarded by God, was probably right. I say this because infants do not need treatment to end this condition of acid reflux. It is said that, with time the problem usually disappears on its own from them. Only when the disease is so severe is when you will need to take the baby to a doctor to be properly diagnosed and be provided with the proper medication to cure the condition.
