Caring for our skin in the winter months is a challenge each and every single year. After the leaves have fallen and the wind gets that old familiar chill in it we think it is time to turn on the old furnace again.
Once we start heating our homes again for the winter season, we usually notice the dry skin starting again and reach for our body lotion a little more than we needed in the summer and autumn. We wish we had figured out a better solution than we did last winter so that we could deal with our skin better this year.
Unfortunately most people just never really find that new solution and simply suffer through the winter in the same manner they did the last dry-skin winter. Body lotion that never really does anything about the dry itchy skin that just seems to get worse the further into winter they get.
So, can anything really ever change this disturbing cycle of dry winter skin? Actually it can. There are some definite steps that can be taken to alter the cycle this winter.
The first thing to consider is the type of lotion you use. Seriously consider a much stronger body lotion for this winter. There are some really good varieties right over the counter at your local pharmacy. Consider some lesser know brands that are much stronger than the runny, perfumed variety you may be used to using on your hands.
Try one that is a much thicker lotion. Get into the habit of putting this lotion on your entire body right after you dry off when you get out of the shower. This will act as a barrier that actually keeps the moisture in your skin and the dry air out. You may find that you will want to do an invigorating body scrub about one once a week to exfoliate a bit as this kind of stronger lotion may also stop some of the usual peeling of your skin.
Another thing to think about is introducing some more moisture into the air in your home. Check out some simple and inexpensive vaporisers. There are some very effective types out there for not a lot of money (there are also some wonderful expensive kinds too, of course).
The most basic kind is electric and you fill it with water and plug it in and it turns the water into steam that is shot into the dry air around you. By putting some moisture back into the air, not only will your dry nasal passages thank you but your skin and hair will as well.
If you are not familiar with vaporisers, do a little research about them because you don’t want to over moisturize your household air either because you certainly won’t want to be dealing with the problems that mould and mildew can cause. Basically, vaporise responsibly.
The third thing you can do that your dry winter skin will thank you for come spring is to try one of the new shower moisturizers out there. This is a new kind of product that has recently shown up and appears to be a possible solution to dry winter skin problems. This kind of moisturizer is almost like the conditioners we use on our hair. It is a skin conditioner that is applied in the shower to condition the skin.
So, don’t go through another winter with the same old routine that really doesn’t change a thing. Shake things up a little this year and really do something that could make a difference.
