This has got to be the fastest growing section in the pharmacy. Every time you make a trip in for toothpaste and other usuals, there is a new teeth whitening paste or bleach or polish, or something! There are an awful lot of us who feel the need to do something about brightening up our smiles, and the pharmacies have sure picked up on that fact and are making a bundle with it.

We all know how our teeth look, and for a lot of us it is not good news! The question is not generally do my teeth need whitening, but which whitening product should I buy? It can be complicated. Very complicated, in fact, given the enormous and mind numbing selection you are presented with upon arrival in the teeth care aisle.

First of all, you should decide what price range you can handle. These products can range in price from a healthy $4.99 to a whopping $59.99 and upwards depending on what kit you decide on, so be prepared to part with a large chunk of cash if you can!

Basically, there are your basic whitening toothpastes, then polishes, then the full fledged bleaching kits complete with gelatine bleach, a self forming teeth tray and after care toothpaste. The basic toothpastes and polishes will be the cheapest whitening option by far.

They work on preventative principles and assume that when your teeth treatment is begun, you have already gleaming, wonderful teeth. Obviously, this is not generally the case. The pastes and polishes will claim to scrub away stained bits of enamel, but in truth you are being sold a preventative product, so keep this in mind despite the fact that it is the cheapest package in the aisle. This is not the option for someone who really needs some serious whitening done.

Next up, in price and quality, are the bleaching strips. These you just take out of the package and stick right onto your teeth. The gelatine bleach coating will hold the strips fast to your teeth while it works, so you should be able to lead a normal life while keeping them on…but it is not advisable to wear the strips out where you might be expected to have a conversation!

They are not the most attractive accessory you will ever buy. In terms of bleaching abilities, the strips do alright, certainly better than any toothpaste or cheap polish will do. The effects come on gradually, and you must continue use of the strips for a few days or weeks, depending on the condition and tone of your teeth.

Finally, the hard core teeth whitening option: all out giant tubes of bleach, teeth trays and tooth polish for maintenance. These are both the most expensive kits and the most likely to get to serious work on stains. The concentrated bleach is the best fighter of any colour other than white, and this is tough stuff.

The idea is to shape your teeth trays for your mouth, and then apply the bleach to the plastic trays before popping them into your mouth and leaving it for fifteen to twenty minutes. Remember: bleach is a harsh chemical, and if you leave it on your teeth too long you can cause damage to the roots that will leave you in agony until they heal.

Do not exceed the amount of time advised on the instruction packet, no matter how quick you want to change your stained teeth! If you go for this option, chances are highest that you will be happy with your purchase.
